Amber Almanac is a booking office in Lincoln, Nebraska. Somebody sends a request, a person here reads it, and if the trip is right for them we place the reservation with the company that runs it. That company then bills the traveller under its own terms, and it takes its commission from that firm once you are back. No money moves through this counter in either direction, and no page on this site has a field on it that would take a card number.
That arrangement changes what a question means here, so the answers below are longer than they would be somewhere that takes payment. Where the honest answer is no, it is written as no with nothing after it. Where a figure can move, the answer says who is allowed to move it. If something you need is not here, the form at the foot of the page runs 24/7. Whatever lands in it seen by a person here before the day's work finishes is out.

Who actually takes my money
Not this office. The company operating the trip bills you directly, on its own paperwork, under its own terms, and you deal with it about the balance and the deadlines. Amber Almanac never sees a card number, holds no deposit and runs no checkout. If you ever find yourself typing payment details into this website, something has gone badly wrong and you should stop.
What does Amber Almanac charge me to arrange this
Nothing. There is no booking fee, no research fee, no consultation charge and no fee if you read a written figure and decide against the whole idea. The operating company pays this office a commission out of what you already paid it, and that commission is settled after you get back, not when you reserve.
Does the commission change which trips you show me
It should not, and here is the check on that: the catalogue is one flat list of twenty four trips printed in five orderings, and none of the five is by what this office earns. Nothing is boosted, nothing is buried, and no trip is presented as the sensible choice. What you get instead is the same list sorted by whichever fact you decided matters.
Are the figures on this site final
No, and they are not written as though they were. Each one is a starting figure per person: the lowest that trip has actually been reserved at recently, in a shared room, before flights unless flights are named. Real dates, a real party size and a real room move it. The figure that binds you is on the operating company's confirmation, not on this page.
What if the operating company raises the price after I ask
Then you are told the new number in writing, in plain figures, along with what changed, and you decide from there. Nothing is reserved in your name while that happens. This office has no ability to hold an old figure, and will not pretend otherwise by quietly sending you the new one as though it had always been the number.
How long does a written figure take
Two to four working days for a figure priced against particular dates, because two operating companies have to answer before it can be assembled. opened by somebody here before that working day is out. A short factual question, the sort with one sentence as its answer, usually comes back inside that same day rather than at the end of the wait.
Can you hold a place while I think
Sometimes. That one sits wholly with the operator and never with this desk: some will hold a cabin or a room for two to five days with nothing paid; others hold nothing at all without a deposit going to them directly. The request form asks about your dates for exactly this reason, and you are told which of the two you are dealing with before you are asked to decide anything.
I am travelling alone. What does that cost
The catalogue figures assume two people sharing, so a solo traveller pays a single supplement on the room or cabin. On the shorter trips here that has run between $180 and $600; on the longer ones it can reach half the trip figure again. A handful of operators waive it on set departures. Ask in the form and the number comes back specific to your trip rather than as a range.
Can I move my dates after reserving
Usually, at a cost the operating company sets, and the cost climbs the closer you get to departure. Some operators charge an administration fee and rebook you at the current figure; others treat a date change as a cancellation and a fresh booking. This office will make the request, chase the answer and tell you the number before anything is agreed. It cannot overrule the operator.
How does cancelling work
By the operator's terms, which are sent to you before you commit rather than after. Those terms tell you what is refundable and by which date, and they vary far more than people expect. Our side of it is set out at the terms for changing or cancelling. Cancelling a request that has not become a reservation costs nothing and needs no reason.
What if this office gets something wrong
You are told, in writing, without being asked. If a date, a room type or an inclusion was misread here, we correct it with the operator at our cost where the operator will let us, and where it will not, you are told what it will cost you before anything is done about it. Nothing gets quietly amended in the hope you do not notice.
Is one of the twenty-four better than another
No. Nothing here is scored, graded, starred or ranked, and no trip is called the best of anything. The five orderings are all by measurable facts: beds slept in, hours in the air, miles walked on an average day, how much is arranged for you, and the starting figure. A fact is not an opinion and none of the five orders is a recommendation.
Which of the five orders should I use
That is your question to answer, and this office will not answer it for you. Picking an ordering is picking which constraint is real for you: a week is a week, four hours in the air is four hours, six miles a day on your feet is six miles. Read all five orderings and start with whichever of those you would notice first.
Will you arrange cover for the trip
No. Amber Almanac puts no cover on sale, arranges none, suggests none and comments on none, and receives nothing from anybody who does. Whether to buy cover, and what it should cover, is a decision to take with a licensed insurance provider directly.
Do you handle visas or entry documents
No. This office does not sell, obtain, check or advise on visas, passports or any other entry document. What is required depends on your own nationality and where you are going, and the only sources worth relying on are the government ones for the country concerned and, if you want an opinion on your case, a qualified immigration attorney.
Can you advise on vaccinations or medical fitness
No. Nobody at this counter is medically qualified and no medical or health advice is given here, ever. Speak to your own physician or a travel medicine clinic. What we will do is pass an operator's written statement about walking distances, altitude or terrain to you unedited, so you can take a real description to a doctor.
Do you operate any of these trips yourselves
No. Amber Almanac Bookings LLC owns no vehicles, employs no guides, runs no hotel and charters nothing. Every trip in the catalogue is run start to finish by an independent operating company that carries its own licences and insurance. This office carries no aircraft, no rooms, no vessels and no coaches of its own, and answers to no company that does, and is not affiliated with any of them.
Will you book my flights
Only where a trip is priced with flights included, in which case the operator arranges them as part of the package. Standalone airfare is not something this office sells, and the fare lookup on this site is a separate tool for your own research. Where flights are not included, the catalogue figure says so and assumes you arrive under your own arrangements.
Can you do this for a group
Yes, and it is a different conversation, which is why it does not run through the same lane. Six or more people usually means the operator quotes as a group, sometimes better, sometimes with a longer lead time and firmer deadlines. Say how many of you there are in the form and how fixed your dates are, and expect the four day end of the reply window.
Is this website a publication
No. This is the website of a working booking office and nothing on it is published as reading matter. There is no schedule of releases, nothing is issued on a cycle, and there is no back catalogue of writing to browse. The pages exist to describe twenty four trips accurately enough that you can send a sensible request about one.
Is anything here an assessment of a place
No. Nothing on this site is an opinion about a destination, a hotel or an operator. Amber Almanac publishes no opinions and grades nothing. What the trip pages carry is descriptive fact: how many nights, how far you walk, what is arranged before you land, what the starting figure covers and what it does not. Where a season is described, it is a record of how that season has been, not a claim about how yours will go.
What if I ask something not on this list
Then ask it. The form takes plain sentences and nobody here minds a question that turns out to have a one word answer. A question about a specific trip is easier to answer well than a general one, so name the trip if you have one in mind. Before you send anything
Two things make a reply useful rather than vague. The first is dates, or at least a month and how much either side of it you can move. Almost every question people ask here, what it costs, whether a place can be held, whether the single supplement applies, has a different answer in different weeks, and without a date the honest reply is a shrug in paragraph form. The second is who is going: how many of you, sharing how many rooms, and whether anybody in the party has a limit worth planning around.
You do not have to have decided anything. Plenty of what comes in reads like a question rather than a booking, and that is a normal way to start. Nothing sent through the form commits you to a trip, a date or a figure, and nothing is reserved in your name until you have read a written quote and said yes to it in words.
