A steep valley of grey rock with stone tower houses on the flat floor, a river of clear water

two northern albanian valleys, one pass, beds in family houses

Reserve a week walking the pass between Theth and Valbona, two valleys, stone houses

The crossing between the two valleys is a single day of about eleven miles with 3,000 feet of climb, and everything else in the week is arranged around it. Reserve this and you are reserving beds in family houses, a boat up a flooded canyon, and a lot of walking on loose limestone.

Nine nights, from $2,230 per person.

Read that word plainly. What happens is that your request goes over from here to whoever puts the trip on the ground, and the money route never touches Amber Almanac Bookings LLC at all. There is no box for card details on any page of this site. Until a figure reaches you in writing and you say yes to the conditions with it, nothing anywhere carries your name.

The photographs from this valley are almost all taken in the same forty minutes of light and from the same three vantage points, and they leave out the surface. What the pass is actually made of is limestone rubble the size of a fist, in a trough worn by two centuries of mules, and it does not photograph. People arrive having seen the towers and the waterfall and are surprised to find that the walking is nearly all looking down at their own feet.

The second thing left out is how recent the road is. Getting to Theth once meant a track that took a serious four-wheel drive most of a day and closed with the first snow. The paved road through to the valley opened in stages and finished in 2022, and the effect was immediate: day visitors, more beds, a coffee place, and a change in what a guesthouse means. Some families now run twelve rooms. Others still run four and put you at the same table as their own dinner. Both are honest and they are different weeks. We will tell you which one you have got before you commit.

Third: the two valleys are not the same country in miniature. Theth is wide, green, damp, full of running water, and its houses are scattered up the slope. Valbona is drier, more open, with a huge white riverbed that is a quarter mile across and dry for most of the summer. The pass between them is the whole point of the week and it is also the only day that will genuinely test you.

The week in one sentence
Nine nights: two in Shkoder in a small hotel, three in a guesthouse in Theth, one in a hut nearer the pass, two in a Valbona guesthouse and one back in Shkoder, moving by van, boat and on foot, with luggage carried ahead by road and packhorse while you walk with a daypack.
Why this and not the next one
Tirana is the practical airport, about thirteen hours in the air from the middle of the country with one or two connections, then three hours by road to Shkoder. The ground is limestone: dry riverbed, scree, and mule track worn into rock, not graded trail. Beds are in family houses with shared bathrooms and, in one case, a bunkroom. The route is walkable from late May, when the snow clears the pass, until early October. From $2,230 per person.
Inside the figure
Nine nights of beds as described; dinner and breakfast every night in the guesthouses; the ferry up the Koman reservoir and the van transfers at both ends; a local walking guide on the pass day and two other days; packhorse or road transfer of your main bag between valleys; airport pickup and return in Tirana; a written route sheet with distances, climb and bail-out points; the request handled by this office and the reservation placed with the operating company.
Outside it, and what that runs to
International flights, roughly $900 to $1,500 round trip from central US airports depending on month; lunches, about $8 to $14 a day and often bought as bread and cheese the night before; all drinks including the raki that will be offered free and the beer that will not; the $6 park entry collected in cash at the Theth end in some years and not others; tips for the guide and the guesthouse families, commonly $80 to $120 across the week; anything you need to buy in Shkoder because your boots failed; travel insurance, which this office does not sell or advise on; the $30 to $60 for a private van if you decide on the day that you would rather not walk the pass.
Reasons to book something else
Do not reserve this if you cannot walk eleven miles in a day with 3,000 feet of climb and 3,600 feet of descent on loose rock, carrying seven or eight pounds, and then do six or seven miles the following day on tired legs. The descent into Valbona is the part that hurts: two hours of steep scree and switchbacks, and there is no vehicle that can reach you for the middle four hours. Bad knees, recent ankle surgery and a dislike of exposure all argue against it. Shared bathrooms and a bunkroom night are not negotiable either.

What the ground is made of, and how a day comes apart

The limestone here drains fast. That is why the Theth river runs hard after rain and why the Valbona riverbed is white gravel you can drive a tractor across in August. It also means the paths dry within hours of a storm, which is the one mercy of the surface. Mud is rarely the problem. Loose rock rolling under a tired ankle at four in the afternoon is.

The record for the last several summers reads roughly like this: June and September have been the reliable stretches, with daytime highs in the valleys in the seventies and low eighties and nights cool enough for a blanket. July and August have run hotter, into the low nineties in Shkoder and the high eighties in the valleys, and the pass day in that heat means starting at six. Afternoon thunder has been common in late June and again in early September, usually arriving after two o'clock, usually over in ninety minutes. None of that is a prediction of your week. It is what the seasons have been.

A day on this trip has an unusual shape because of the guesthouse rhythm. Breakfast is early and large. Dinner is at seven or half past and is served all at once, family style, and you will eat things you did not order: cornbread, white cheese, beans cooked with a lot of oil, sometimes lamb. There is a gap in the middle of the afternoon that nobody plans and everybody ends up using for sleeping. The waking hours here run about fifty five percent decided in advance, which is to say the walking days are fixed and the rest is not.

Who ends up glad they came here

This suits a walker who wants one hard day and does not need a mountain range to be a project. It suits people who are comfortable being fed rather than choosing, who can sleep in a room with a thin wall, and who find a family's working farmyard more interesting than a lobby. It suits people traveling in a pair or a threesome. It does not need any technical skill: there is no scrambling, no rope, nothing exposed enough to stop a steady walker, though there is a stretch near the top where the drop on your left is real and you will notice it.

It suits badly anyone who wants to be moved from view to view. Half the week is spent in one valley on foot, and the walks out of Theth are out-and-back: the Blue Eye spring, the lock-in tower, the waterfall, the old church. If a repeated valley floor bores you, this will bore you by day five.

The same twenty-four trips are printed in five orders. This one sits in a different place in each, and none of the five positions is a judgement about it.

What each stretch of the season has actually been like

Late May to mid June
Snow off the pass most years by the last week of May, though 2023 held it into June. Water everywhere, the waterfall at full force, wildflowers heavy. Fewer beds open, and some guesthouses still cold at night.
Mid June to mid July
The steadiest walking of the year on the record: warm days, dry rock, thunder arriving after two most afternoons. Guesthouses fill. This is when the pass day is most crowded, perhaps sixty walkers spread over eight hours.
Mid July to late August
Hot. Nineties in Shkoder, high eighties in the valleys, and a six o'clock start on the pass is not optional. The Valbona river bed is dry white stone. Beds are hardest to get and cost more.
Late August to mid September
The stretch most people would pick if they knew. Heat off, light long, rock dry, water back in the Theth river after the first storms. Prices ease slightly after the first week of September.
Mid September to early October
Quiet, cool, and beautiful, with beech turning above 4,500 feet. Some guesthouses close from the last week of September and the boat runs a shorter timetable. Nights near freezing at the hut.
October onward
We do not place this trip. The pass becomes a snow route, the road can close, and most of the families move down to Shkoder for the winter.

The parts of this week that people complain about afterward

The luggage. Your main bag goes over the pass by packhorse or around by road, and neither is fast or precise. It has arrived four hours after the walkers more than once, and on one occasion the next morning. You carry what you actually need for the night in your daypack, and that instruction is not decorative. People who ignore it spend an evening in walking clothes.

The other honest drawback is noise and thin walls in the guesthouses, and the fact that dinner is at a fixed hour whether or not you are hungry. Rooms are simple, hot water is real but sometimes finite, and in the hut near the pass you will share a bunkroom with strangers for one night. There is no version of this trip with private bathrooms throughout, and any office that offers you one in these two valleys is describing a different route. We would rather you knew that now than at eight in the evening in Theth.

Make a reservation, or ask before you do

Requests reach this form 24/7; no hour of any week closes it. Anything arriving is opened by somebody here before that working day is out. Putting a figure against your dates runs a further two to four working days, because it waits on two operating firms.

Look for a place to enter card details, on this page or any other, and there is not one. Sending this holds nothing in your name; it opens the enquiry. What turns into a reservation is a written figure you have read, from a firm you can see named, on conditions you have agreed to. Look at the terms for changing or cancelling first.
